Since a short while ago BV8000 was deposed from the throne of outdoor smartphones, Blackview responds by putting on the market the BV9000 Pro, a brand new competitor. The goal is to create an outdoor cellphone with incredible performance, which is not too bulk and fits comfortably in the jeans pockets. Find out in the review if Blackview has succeeded!
Design and build quality
With its dimensions of 160 x 80 x 10 mm, the smartphone is not necessarily smaller than some competitors in this category, but with a thickness of 10mm, it is definitely thinner. But the weight still remains quite high with 256g.
If you’re used to the thickness of an outdoor phone, you’ll be more than surprised holding this Blackview device for the first time. The smartphone is unusually handy and comparatively thinner. Will it be as resistant as its bigger and thicker colleagues? The IP-68 certification lets us think so. A fall from the table was not a problem for the phone, it may be just as good as its colleagues. Thanks to the sealings of the various ports of the phone, it will be impossible for water to enter it, as was shown by our test. However, the frame around the display seems to protect the glass very little, which I see as a weak point.
The frame that should protect the phone from falls is made of metal with a rubber layer. The bars on the left and right, as well as the rear side (where you can find the dual-camera and the fingerprint scanner), are made of metal. If you take a closer look at the rear side, you will notice that there is no flap to screw. In fact, unlike its previous models, here Blackview decided to place the SIM and the Micro-SD slots on the back of the phone. For this choice, however, it was necessary to give up the headphone jack connector. As a result, a USB-C to AUX adapter will be required to connect headphones to the device. Luckily, Blackview was generous and decided to include this adapter in the smartphone’s scope of delivery. Unfortunately, the new accommodation of the SIM tray is not the best. In fact, if you do not insert the SIM ejection tool with precision, you miss the pressure point. Once the tray is put out, you can pull it out from the casing thanks to the hook of the SIM ejection tool. Sadly, the USB connector of the adapter is definitely longer than needed and therefore, not all other cables can be used easily.
BV9000 Pro’s buttons are all on the right side. Volume, power, and special buttons are also made of metal. Regrettably, they are not completely stable, but the feedback is still pleasant.
On the front, we find a 5.7-inch display. Thanks to the 18: 9 ratio, the phone does not seem too massive. In fact, it is possible to use the device only with one hand. Soft-touch buttons were completely omitted, the operation is done via on-screen buttons. As usual, earpiece, front camera, and main sensors are located above the display. Blackview also provides BV9000 Pro with a notification LED.
The speaker is located on the rear side of the phone and plays the sound at a very high volume. Most of the time though, the sound quality is not great with the volume at its maximum. It will not be too pleasant to listen to music with the maximum volume, but we assure you that you will hear your phone ringing, even if you were to be miles away from it. At a volume of about 50%, the sound is more than enough to watch videos or play games. The headphones included in the package are quite good and deliver a nice sound and powerful basses.
The Blackview BV9000 Pro makes a good impression. It is well built and the gaskets do their job well. Personally, it did not bother me that the side buttons wobbled a bit, but for this reason, I can not give a high score regarding the build quality.
Blackview BV9000 Pro scope of delivery
The scope of delivery of the BV9000 Pro is generous. In the box we will find:
- Quick start Guide
- Adapter USB-C to Micro-USB
- Adapter USB-C to headphone jack
- SIM ejection tool
- Charger and USB-C cable
- Screen protector
- Finger holder
BV9000 Pro has a 5.7-inch display with a resolution of 1440 × 720 pixels. The display ratio is 18:9, and makes the smartphone very handy. Color representation and screen brightness are really good. Since the weather conditions of the last few weeks were terrible, I could not test the brightness of the phone under strong sunlight. But after this test period, I can say that its brightness does not look bad at all.
Gorilla Glass 5 protects the display of BV9000. The touchscreen registers 5 touches at the same time and responds quickly to inputs. However, sometimes, I had the feeling of having to press with more decision so that the screen would recognize my touch. This was especially necessary when I was wearing gloves (with which I can normally use my smartphone). With the other devices I tested, I did not have this problem, only with this Blackview device it did not work properly; nevertheless, the smartphone’s display is convincing and it can be used quite well in the rain.
Performance and operating system
Blackview BV9000 Pro uses the MediaTek MT6757CD processor, also known as Helio P25. The 8 Cortex A53 cores are divided into two clusters. The first cluster works at a maximum of 1690 MHz, while the second, a little more powerful, reaches up to 2392 MHz. The processor is supported by 6 GB of RAM, 128 GB of storage and a Mali T880 GPU. At least this is the case of the device we tested. In fact, there is also a slightly smaller version with 4 / 64GB of storage.
The RAM has a very good speed of 4140 MB / s, this means that the phone will not have problems performing several functions at the same time (multitasking). The internal storage offers 128 GB of space for photos, videos, etc. With a writing speed of 187 MB / s and a reading speed of 112 MB / s, the device proves to be quite fast. For those who need more space in terms of internal storage, there is the possibility to extend it thanks to a micro-SD card. In this case, however, one has to renounce to the dual-SIM function of the phone.
The smartphone has enough power to perform all daily functions. We did not even have problems playing games with very demanding graphics. Both the RAM and the internal storage are very large.Antutu Result Geekbench Multi Result Geekbench Single Result 3D Mark Result
The operating system of Blackview BV9000 Pro is based on Android 7.1.1. There is also an App for themes, where, however, we found only one theme and there was no possibility to download others. As usual for outdoor smartphones, there are many special features on the phone. For example, Gesture control, Gesture unlock, One-handed mode and SOS mode. However, the latter is only available in Russian at the moment, which makes the configuration a bit difficult. I hope that Blackview solves this problem with a future update. The SOS mode can be activated via the special button, which allows up to 3 configurations. That is, a double pressure, a single pressure and a prolonged pressure can perform various functions. The split-screen function works without any problems, and both apps can be used in parallel without slowing down the system and without lags.
The system itself is not bad, it offers many functions and never gave us problems during the test phase. Unfortunately, there was one little bug: sometimes it happened that Bluetooth was turned on by itself.
The main camera of Blackview BV9000 Pro is a dual-camera, with a resolution of 13 + 5 MP. Clearly, Blackview wanted to produce a worthy successor of BV8000. In fact, BV9000 has a pretty good camera and delivers good pictures. Also, trigger time is low and the autofocus is very fast. The photos are definitely sharp and with a good color representation. The second sensor in the camera is a monochromatic sensor, which should give us a bokeh effect. In the Selective-Focus-Mode, a fuzzy veil is placed around the focused point; if you hold the second camera closed, the fuzzy ring disappears. Different levels are, unfortunately, not recognized as usual and there is simply no benefit from the second sensor.
The front camera has 8MP. The Sony sensor delivers quite passable pictures for a front camera. Selfies often depict more image noise than the pictures of the main camera. Nevertheless, the color representation is good and the quality is sufficient to take selfies occasionally.
Usually, the camera does not play a very important role in outdoor smartphones, but lately, we notice that the manufacturers are trying to improve even in this category. In fact, Blackview’s camera takes really great photos!
Connectivity and communication
The device supports all 2G, 3G, and 4G frequencies. The reception is good and even LTE was almost always available. There are big flaws regarding 3G, which has not always been very stable. We can not say with certainty if the cause of this is to be found in the bad weather conditions of the recent weeks or if it is a defect of the smartphone. The voice quality during calls is excellent. I always understood the caller well and vice versa. On board, we also find Bluetooth, which works without problems and connects to my portable speaker and to other smartphones very quickly.
Blackview supports 2.4 and 5 GHz standard ac / a / b / g / n networks. GPS is simply fantastic. In a few seconds, the phone determines your current position and is ready for navigation. Whether on foot or by car, traveling with this phone was not a problem.
In addition to the fingerprint scanner, BV9000 Pro has 3 standard sensors: proximity, acceleration, and brightness sensors. As every outdoor smartphone, BV9000 also offers a compass and a gyroscope. All sensors work perfectly. The fingerprint scanner quickly recognizes the user and instantly unlocks the smartphone.
Blackview BV9000 Pro’s battery has a capacity of 4180 mAh. The results of our test confirmed values of around 4000 mAh, which is still within the tolerance. In the benchmarks, the phone lasts 11 hours and 13 minutes, a pretty good value. Personally, I managed to use the phone 2 days in a row without having to charge it. I’m not talking about an excessive use, but I’ve even played with it sometimes. If you rarely pick up your phone, it will also last for 3 days in a row. Thanks to the quick-charge function, the phone is completely charged within 2 hours.Battery lifetime Result Unit: hours
