With the Mi Robot Vacuum, Xiaomi turned the market for robot vacuum cleaners upside down. In order to increase the lead, Xiaomi now launches the successor RoboRock S50 –Sweep One. The Xiaomi Vacuum 2 offers a lot of improvements in almost every area, and an international version is also available. We compared the RoboRock Sweep One with the “old” Xiaomi Vacuum 1, and we were amazed by the changes.
Although the price might suggest otherwise, the Xiaomi Vac 1 as well as the new Xiaomi VAC 2 (RoboRock Sweep One) are in direct competition with the top models by iRobot, Vorwerk, Dyson and Neato. Not only do Xiaomi’s products look better, they also perform better in most fields than the 2-3 times as expensive products of the competition.
RoboRock Sweep One scope of delivery and installation
Our international version is delivered including a user manual, a declaration of conformity and an EU power plug for the charger. Digital operating instructions are available in the Mi Home App. Everything else is identical to the Chinese version, which often costs a lot less. The Chinese version, as the international version, communicates with the Mi Home App in English. The charger needs to be connected to the provided 2-Pin EU power cable and then to be installed at any place of your apartment.
If you buy the Chinese version, you either have to buy a European power plug, or you use the adapter which is provided freely by most online shops. For safety reasons we recommend the first possibility! It is also possible to hide the charger beneath cupboards or wardrobes; according to the instructions, there should be a free space of 0.5m on the sides and 1.5m in front of the charger. At my apartment, the charger has 70cm of space, which is still enough for the robot to find its way home. You can also fix a waterproof plastic mat to the charger, so that the floor does not get wet constantly if you do not remove the mopping pad after use.
The RoboRock Sweep One’s scope of delivery contains:
- Water tank
- 2 mopping pads
- 1 waterproof plastic mat
- 2-Pin EU power plug
- Xiaomi Mi Vacuum 2
- User manual
- Dust filter
- Cleaning tool for the main brush (stashed in the robot vacuum cleaner)
After pulling the white flap upwards, you get access to the dust container, the reset button and the Wi-Fi LED. The first installation is quite easy:
- Download and install the Xiaomi Mi Home App on your smartphone (from the Playstore or App-store). Then create a Xiaomi account and search for new devices. Choose “Mainland China” as location.
- Start the robot by pressing the power button; the Wi-Fi LED should flash slowly. While searching for connection, the LED flashes fast, after a successful connection it constantly shines blue. If something goes wrong or the location (the Wi-Fi network) is changed, press and hold the reset button (located next to the power-LED) for 5 seconds.
The RoboRock Sweep One itself has only 3 buttons. One to start, stop, pause, one for the spot-cleaning mode and one to send the robot back to the charger. When the robot vacuum cleaner is turned on, a white LED is shining. If the LED around the power button shines red, less than 20% of the battery are left.
Build quality and function
The Xiaomi RoboRock Sweep One’s main task is still vacuum cleaning, which the robot does perfectly. According to the data sheet, the vacuum property was increased from 1800 to 2000 Pascal (compared to Mi Robot 1). In daily use, you do not notice a difference; the results were the same in any comparative tests.
The vacuum property is regulated by the settings in the app. Compared to the first version, you now have 4 modes at your disposal: Quiet, Balanced, Turbo and Max. The battery consumption in the Max mode is respectively higher, but the Balanced mode is mostly enough for some crumbs and food scraps. If you got any pets, it might be a different thing. In Balanced mode 25% of the battery were needed for 50m². The Turbo mode consumed 34%. Using the Balanced mode, the background noise stayed at pleasant 65 dezibel.
The cleaning system for vacuum cleaning remains unchanged. A rotating brush located at the left side pulls the dirt inside to the rotating main brush and the rubber lips. Reaching the main brush, the dirt is sucked inside the slightly bigger 500ml dust container with 2000Pa. You can even wash the dust filter now, but it should dry for 24 hours.
On shag-pile carpets, the RoboRock Sweep One does significantly better than its predecessor. Whereas the old Xiaomi already had problems getting onto the carpet, the RoboRock had none. The Carpet mode (explained later) recognizes a carpet and the vacuum intensity is automatically increased. The robot can master up to 2cm of difference in altitude now, which is enough for most carpets. Its dimensions are 353x350x96.5mm.
Navigation is almost identical to the Xiaomi Robot 1. First, the robot goes around the whole room, then the room is cleaned efficiently and time-saving in the z-shaped mode. It is interesting that the new RoboRock cleaned my apartment 10 minutes (on average) faster than the Vac 1. It could be because of the laser sensor, which is now located in the middle. The RoboRock cleaned slightly more careful and faster along the baseboards than Mi Robot 1 did.
The RoboRock Sweep One is now also able to mop the floor and it even possesses a small mobile water tank. However, this mop-function is not comparable to an actual floor mop (as the Xiaomi Mop for instance). Compared to sole vacuum cleaning, if I had to state a number, I would say the apartment looks about 20% cleaner after using the mop-function. Fresh stains are either mopped away or they are smeared; proper mopping with water is definitely more effective. If required, the water tank and the mopping pad can be fixed at the robot’s back. Unfortunately, the RoboRock Sweep One also mops your carpets; a no-carpet-mode would have been nice. However, we suspect that this could be fixed with an update.
Overview of all clearing functions:
Zoned Clean-Up (only Roborock)
The function offers the possibility to let the Xiaomi RoboRock clean only certain areas of your apartment. The virtual areas can be customized easily and you can make the robot vacuum clean/mop once, twice or three times in succession. Unfortunately, this feature cannot be determined temporally separately, so far. I would love a feature with which it were possible to make the robot clean the kitchen every 24 hours, the bathroom every 48 hours, and the whole apartment every 3 days. It is likely that there will be an update, as the Xiaomi Robot 1 was provided with several updates as well, which was unique for a robot vacuum cleaner.
Carpet Mode (only RoboRock)
The robot reliably recognizes carpets and automatically increases the vacuum intensity, as soon as it is on a carpet. This function works surprisingly well and reliably. The no-carpet-mode is on my wishlist, as the RoboRock Sweep One otherwise eagerly mops every carpet that’s in its way.
This standard function is also available, of course. Just put the robot in any room and press the respective button on the device or in the app.
If activated, the Xiaomi RoboRock Sweep One will neither make any noise nor start cleaning in a previously defined period of time.
Remote control (only Roborock)
Finding the RoboRock
In case you’re living in a huge apartment full of nooks and crannies you can let the robot call “I’m over here” by pressing the button.
In the menu item ‘care’ you see the condition of the sensors and brushes (indicated in percentages). The filter has a limited lifetime as well; however, it was increased significantly due to the possibility to wash it.
All maps are saved
Zoned clean-up is always based on the latest map. Therefore, you cannot select all old maps, but only the spot of the last, complete cleaning. Nevertheless, all maps and cleaning processes are saved along with the map, time, duration and size.
As already mentioned, you cannot define the virtual areas (zoned clean-up) temporally. You can only determine when the robot should start cleaning and in which mode. Of course, you can set several timers.
Replacement parts and upkeep
Another big advantage of the Mi Robot 1 was the availability of replacement parts like brushes, filters or even a new sensor. Currently, only few spare parts are available for the Sweep One, but I think more replacement parts will be available soon. The main and side brushes are identical to the Xiaomi Mi Vacuum 1. Only if you wish to buy a new dust container you should watch out which one you choose. You’ll find any spare parts on Aliexpress, and they cost less than 20$ and can be ordered without hesitation and with free shipping.
Those who have problems with the LDS of the old Mi Vacuum does not have to switch to the RoboRock, you can simply repair it with our instructions.
