UMIDIGI is one of the oldest Chinese mobile phone manufacturers: with the UMIDIGI Z2, the old flagship Z1 will soon enter the next round. It was announced with the sentence “UMIDIGI Z2 is much more amazing than people expected”. This is what awaits us: a large 6.2 inch display that covers the entire front – the notch is also included. It was also teased with 4 camera sensors, a 7000mAh battery, NFC and an in-display fingerprint. Performance will probably not be neglected either. Let’s take a look at what awaits us at the UMIDIGI Z2!
The comparison to the upcoming Ulefone T2 and T2 Pro is also quite obvious – we have already reported on this.
We were already able to see the design of the UMIDIGI Z2 in its full glory – although it doesn’t have to be the final design yet. The comparison with the iPhone X is unfortunately quite obvious, since the front is defined by the full screen design including notch.
On the picture we see the Umidigi Z2 in red, next to it there will be a black model. Apart from the black front, the metal frame and the glass back are also red. On the front the sensors and the dual front camera are located in the notch. The back is mostly clean, except for the 3 round elements: 2 camera sensors and a fingerprint sensor. The latter could still be omitted, since the in-display scanner has already been indicated. Depending on when the UMIDIGI Z2 will be released, the high-end feature might really make it into the model. At the bottom side the phone can be loaded via USB-Type-C. Two openings for the loudspeaker and the microphone were also located here.
A 6.2-inch Full HD + display in 18:9 format will be used in the UMIDIGI Z2.
The resolution is 2246 x 1080 pixels and thus the pixel density is 401 PPI.
The 6.2-inch display does not necessarily mean that the mobile phone will be inconvenient to use. Firstly, because the 18:9 format, but also the notch in the display contribute to keeping the smartphone handy – i.e. not even as large as perhaps “6.2 inches”. By way of comparison, the new Huawei P20 Pro has a 6.1 inch display, but at 155 x 74 x 7.8 mm it is no larger than a classic 16:9 smartphone with 5.5 inch display (OnePlus 5: 154 x 74 x 7.25 mm).
If UMIDIGI has shown one thing, it is that they can build good looking smartphones: We expect the Z2 to be a beautiful flagship phone.
Unfortunately, very little has been announced about the equipment of the UMIDIGI Z2:
- An in-display fingerprint sensor: it has been used for some time for advertising in various devices; perhaps it does not come either.
- Quad-Camera-Setup: we know the Fake Dual-Cams well enough! But now more and more manufacturers are proving that they can also use real dual-cams.
- A big 7000mAh battery: on the pictures the UMI Z2 doesn’t look very big – how should such a big battery fit in here? Our battery list includes some models with large batteries and these are more opulent than the Z2
Which hardware will drive the expected UMIDIGI Z2 cannot be said yet. If you want to continue the performance of the UMI Z, the MediaTek Helio X30 would be the right choice. In the Meizu Pro 7 Plus, the smartphone was convincing in terms of performance. More likely, however, they will rely on the latest generation of MediaTek: the Helio P60 has already been announced and offers some features that will be very important for the new smartphones. In addition, at least 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage space and upwards can be expected.
The question arises with the OS: will UMIDIGI set again on its contaminated UMI OS Launcher or have they learned from the errors and installed Stock Android. The design, display and concept are right. Either way, we will keep an eye on the UMIDIGI Z2.
